His paternal grandparents were Hugh Dutton and Muriel Despencer; his maternal grandparents were Vivian Sandon and Mrs. Vivian Sandon. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Margaret and Katherine de. He was the second oldest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Margaret and Katherine.
