Emma de was born about 1033 in , Conteville, Lorraine, France.1   Emma de's father was Harlevin de Conteville and her mother was Herleve de Mortaigne. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert de, Odo de, Muriel de and Mathilde de.  She was the third oldest of the five children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Robert II de, Guillaume de, Adelaide and Godiva de.

‌Emma de and Richard le Gros were married in a religious ceremony about 1048 in <, Avranches, Manche, France>.1   They had two sons and four daughters, named Hugh, Ranulph, Judith, Maud, Arbella Loup and Helga.
