Elizabeth was born in 1223.1 Elizabeth's father was William Earl of Buchan Comyn and her mother was Margaret Colhan. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Comyn and Hextilda Fitzuctred of Tynedale; her maternal grandfather was Fergus Earl of Buchan. She had a brother and a sister, named Alexander and Margaret.
