His paternal grandparents were Robert I Brus and Agnès Pagnell; his maternal grandparents were William de Arches and Ivetta de York. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Oswalda, UNKNOWN and UNKNOWN. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Hugh, Agnes and Maud.
