Joseph was born about 1683 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island.1 Joseph's father was Jeremiah Brown and his mother was Mary Slocum. His paternal grandparents were Chaddus Brown and Elizabeth Sharparrowe; his maternal grandparents were Giles Slocum and Joann Cook. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Daniel, Samuel, Mary and Hannah. He had three half-brothers named James, John and William.
