His christening this date is recorded on the Parish registers of Old Cleeve.
His will probated Jan. 16, 1683 bequeathed considerable real estate and livestock to six of his nine children. Three sons referred to as
"louving" sons, only received five shillings each. He had earlier deeded land to two of these sons. It is possible that the other son,
Samuel, had joined or gone with his relative Anthony Slocombe to North Carolina. As evidence of the relationship to the Cook family, Arthur
Cooke was an overseer to the will, and witnessed it with his wife Margrett, and John Cooke and Mary, his wife.
Giles Slocombe emigrated to America after his mother's death in 1643. He was her only son, and sole executor of her will dated Nov. 21, 1642, and proved Jan. 26, 1643, in Old Cleeve, Co. Somerset, England. His father had died earlier, so he assumed full adult responsibility at a young age. He married when he was only 18, and had his first child a year later, in England. Upon immigration, he first went to Taunton, Plymouth Colony where a kinsman Anthony Slocum had emigrated earlier. He then removed to Rhode Island, and was first
granted 30 acres of land in Portsmouth Sept. 4, 1648. He acquired land over the next 40 years in Portsmouth, Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and Taunton and Dartmouth, Massachusetts. One interesting acquisition was 1/24th part of the purchasers Township of Dartmouth, in New Plymouth, Mass., from Nathaniel, William, and Wrestling Brewster, who received it as a gift from their "Dear Mother Mistress Sarah Brewster". This is the family of Love Brewster, son of William Brewster, who came over on the Mayflower. In addition, the cost of this piece was "paid by Ralph Earle in behalf of Gyles Slocume." We later find a grand-daughter of Ralph Earle, as the wife of a grandson of Giles
Slocum. He and his wife became members of the Society of Friends. Their children were Johanna, John, Giles, Ebenezer, Nathaniel, Peleg,
Samuel, Mary, and [BO:Eliezer:BO]. Giles owned "ase, cowes, oxen, sheepe, horskine" and his "earemarke" was a matter of public record in Portsmouth.
As a side note, the phrases in quotations are from transcripts of original records, using whatever spelling they did. Differences in spelling in no way implied ignorance, as there were no strict grammatical rules of spelling or punctuation. The same person would spell his own name differently on different documents in some cases. The idea of spelling things like they sounded did not die out in the Slocum family, as Vol. II of [UL:The Slocums of America:UL] by Charles
