Rev. Ebenezer Slocum, second son of Giles and Joan Slocum, was born March 25, 1650, in Portsmouth, and settled on Canonicut Island, which forms a part of the town of Jamestown, Rhode Island, where he received a deed of land from his father, October 25, 1678. The following year he was deputy to the general court and served in that office most of the time until his death in 1715, being a part of the time speaker of the house. He presided at the first election held in Jamestown, April 1, 1682, and was afterward "counsellman," head warden and moderator. He was among the early proprietors of East Greenwich, and drew lot No. 36 in the first division of land there, June 6, 1700. By act of assembly he was authorized to establish a ferry between North Kingstown and Canonicut, in May, 1707. He gave one acre of land and the meeting house in South Kingstown by deed of August 15, 1710, and on September 27 of the same year gave land for a meeting house in Jamestown. He was among the most active and faithful of the Friend's ministers, and died April 13, 1715. He married Mary Thurston, born 1657, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mott) Thurston. She survived him more than seventeen years, and died November 16, 1732, in Jamestown. His will dated Dec. 10, 1714, was probated Apl. 20, 1715 with wife Mary and son Ebenezer as executors. He gives to wife a feather bed, negro woman "Kate" and all plate; to sons, Samuel, Ebenezer, Giles and Joseph and to daus. Elizabeth, widow of Peter Greene, Rebecca, wife of William Burling, Desire, wife of Samuel Dyer, five shillings each, they having already had from their grandfather Thurston; to daus. Mercy and Abigail each œ50 at 18.
Inventory œ625:8:6, viz. 12 spoons œ8, 2 cups œ5, 4 porringers œ11, tankard œ15, feather beds, negro woman "Kate" œ42, white horse, Concordance, Great Bible, parcel of old books 6s, clock œ20, money, etc. He was buried in the Friends Burying Ground at Jamestown.
