William Basset 
William was born in 1134 in Sapcote, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England.1 William's father was Richard Basset and his mother was Matilda De Ridel. His paternal grandparents were Ralph Basset and Alice (Agatha) De Bruce; his maternal grandparents were Lord Of Witheringe and Lupas. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Geoffrey, Geoffrey, Lord Of, Jordan Basset De, Philip, Aliva and Sibbel. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. William Basset (ancestor of the house of Sapcote, being th e youngest son of the said William and Maud), "having no ad vancement by the house of Rydell, retained "Undie" the devi se of the Bassets, and only changed the colours thereof (fr om gold and red) into silver and black. But, about the tim e of Edward III, Simon Basset, Baron of Sapcote (descende d from the forenamed William) and Sir John Basset of Blor e (also so descended), both of them (I know not the case wh y) at one instant (as I think) relinquished their devise o f "Undie" and invested themselves into "Ridels" (ie. th e 3 piles with certain variations). [G.E. Cokayne] J. H. R ound, however points out that all this is invalidated by th e fact that Geoffrey Ridel d. as early as 1120, when ther e cannot have existed a family coat of Ridel.
