Richard Basset, called the eldest son by Dugdale and the 2nd by others, succeeded his father as Justice of England, wh ich high office he filled in the latter part of King Henr y I's reign and through the whole of King Stephen's. In the 5th year of the latter monarch [1140], he was sheriff o f Surrey, Cambridge, and Huntingdonshire, with Aleric de Ve re, and he served the same office for Essex, Hertford, Buck ingham, Bedford, Norfolk, Suffolk, Northampton, and Leicest ershires. He m. Maud, only dau. and heir of Geoffrey Ridel , Lord of Witheringe, by Geva, dau. of Hugh Lupus, Earl o f Chester, and had issue, Geoffrey, Ralph, and William. He was s. by his eldest son, Geoffrey de Ridel, who, from his mother, assumed the surname "de Ridel." [Sir Bernard Burk e, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, Burke' s Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 26, Basset, Barons Basset , of Welden]
Richard Basset (d 1144?), justiciar, was son of Ralph Basset, and associated with him in the administration. Henry of Huntingson speaks of him as a 'justiciary of all England,' and Orderic asserts that, under Henry I, he had power 'utpote capitalis justitiarii,' and built himself a stately keep on his paternal fief of Montreuil (an Houlme), which, however, was wrested from him on Henry's death. He appears in the Pipe Roll of 1129-30 as succeedeing to his father's circuit, and a s joint sheriff with Alberic de Vere for eleven counties. He married Maud, daughter of Geoffrey Ridel, the justiciary, and founded, with her, the priory of Laund, Leicestershire. Foss maintains (from the Pipe Roll of I Hen II) that he was still living in 1154, but this roll does not exist, and he is mentioned as dead in the 'De Contemptu' of Henry of Huntingdon, which is attributed to 1145.
