Nicholas was born about 1314 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland. Nicholas' father was Kenneth Sutherland and his mother was Margaret (Marjory) (Mary) de Mar. His paternal grandfather was William Sutherland; his maternal grandparents were Donald de Mar and Helen verch Llywelyn. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Eustachia. He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named David I and Isabelle. He died after 1363 in Duffus Castle, Morayshire, Scotland.General Notes

Nicholas Sutherland, the first of his family who held the lands fromwhich his descendants took their title, was the second son of Kenneth,fourth Earl of Sutherland, by his wife Mary or Marjorie, daughter ofDonald, tenth Earl of Mar. In 1360 his elder brother William, Earl ofSutherland, granted to him sixteen davochs of the land in the free baronycalled Torboll, as named and described, to be held in free barony for theservice of one Knight yearly. This grant was confirmed by King David IIon 17 October 1363. He acquired part of the ancient barony of Duffus inMoray, and also, it would appear, lands in Caithness, by his wife, Mary,the elder daughter and co-heiress of Reginald le Cheyne and Mary, Lady ofDuffus, his wife. Towards the close of his life he appears as Lord of theCastle of Duffus, showing that with his wife's portion of the barony heheld the chief messuage. [The Scots Peerage III:191]
