Colban, eight Earl of Fife, succeeded Earl Malcolm in 1266. He wasknighted by King Alexander III in 1264, when he can have been only in his'teens, as he was in nonage when he succeeded his father two years later. He must also have married while yet a youth, as at his death in 1270 hisson and successor was eight years of age. He amrried a lady whom we knowonly the Christian name. A charter of his to Master William Wychard(probably the same who was afterwards Bishop of St Andrews) of the landsof Glensallauch in the Mearns, is said to be granted with the consent andgoodwill of Anna his spouse, and the suggestion may be hazarded thatCountess Anna was one of the three daughters and co-heiress of Sir AlanDurward. Earl Colban's arms on the seal are paly of six. [The ScotsPeerage IV:10-11]
