Gratney de Mar 
Gratney was born in 1272 in Kildrummy Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Gratney's father was Donald de Mar and his mother was Helen verch Llywelyn. He had three sisters named Margaret (Marjory) (Mary), Margaret and Isabel. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers named Colbran and MacDuff. GRATNEY, EARL OF MAR [SCT], son and heir. On 11 June 1297, as Gartney deMar, he was acting with the Bishop of Aberdeen as joint keeper of theshire of Aberdeen, by appointment of Edward I, and received that King'sthanks for his work. As (Sir) Gartenethe fiz le conte de Marre he and hiscolleagues reported to Edward 25 July 1297. The dates both of hissuccession to the Earldom. (probably soon after July 1297) and of hisdeath are uncertain. He must have been dead in September 1305. Hemarried, in or after 1292, Christian, sister of Robert, KING OF SCOTLAND(1306-1329), and daughter of Robert (BRUCE), EARL OF CARRICK, [SCT], byMargaret, suo jure COUNTESS OF CARRICK [SCT]. With her he obtained thelordship (sometimes called Earldom) of Garioch. His widow married SirChristopher SETON. They were both in the castle of Kildrummy when it wastaken by assault in 1306 (between May and October), and Sir Christopherhanged and drawn for treason, by the English. She married, 3rdly(dispensation 12 Kal. October 1325), Sir Andrew MORAY, of Bothwell(1298-1338), Pantler and afterwards Regent of Scotland. King Davidvisited Kildrurnmy in June 1341, and Queen Joan appears to have stayedthere with the Countess Christian for some time during that year or 1342.She died at a great age in 1356 or 1357.
