John was born in 1687 in Gloucester Co, Virginia. John's father was Robert Foster and his mother was Elizabeth Garnett. His paternal grandparents were Richard Forster and Sussan Garnett; his maternal grandparents were John Garnett and Ann Taylor. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Robert, James, Richard, George, Thomas, William, Anthony, Barbara, Margaret and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
