Walter was born about 1190 in Altyre, Morayshire, Scotland.  Walter's father was William Comyn and his mother was Sarah FitzHugh.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Comyn and Hextilda of Tynedale; his maternal grandfather was Robert FitzHugh. He had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Jean.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Alexander, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He died in November 1258 in Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.

‌Walter were married in a religious ceremony after June 30th, 1233.
