His paternal grandparents were Richard Comyn and Hextilda of Tynedale; his maternal grandfather was Robert FitzHugh. He had a brother and a sister, named Walter and Jean. He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Alexander, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth.
