Stephen was born in 1783 in Culpepper,VA. Stephen's father was Richard Gaines and his mother was Elizabeth Flint. His paternal grandparents were Henry Gaines and Mariah Woods Steppe. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Richard, Thomas, Henry and Mary Ellen. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died about 1846 in Crawford Co.,IL.-
