Samuel was born on July 5th, 1793 in Monongahelia County,West Virginia. Samuel's father was Thomas Dewees and his mother was Catherine Spencer. His paternal grandparents were Joshua Dewees and Elizabeth Bowman. He had a brother and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named William, Catherine, Sarah, Elizabeth, Hester Letitia and ?. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
