He was the founder of the great House of Savoy. The LDS AF shows Gerald of
Geneva as his father and Ancelia Von Lenz as his mother. The "Dictionary of
Royal Lineage" shows his father as AMADEUS I, but. . . Stewart Baldwin posted

soc.genealogy.medieval on 1 Nov 1996 (in part): Subject: Re: SAVOY, that this
link is doubtful. Stuart's "Royalty For Commoners" (173:35) shows his parents
as Humbert & "perhaps" a dau. of Amadeo of Spoleto. Right now, the best I can
do is call his parentage "Unknown".

"Moriarty's _Plantagenet Ancestry_ covers the Counts of Maurienne and Savoy on
pp. 58-9 and 236-8. Moriarty says "The parentage and ancestry of the Conte
Bianca Mano [Humbert I], the Burgundian stammvater of the great House of
Savoy, has been the object of intensive study by Italian, German, French and
English scholars, but nothing conclusive has been established." On pp. 236-8,
Moriarty outlines three different theories of Humbert's ancestry. One of them,
due to C. Previte-Orton, gives Humbert a descent from Charles Constantine,
about which Moriarty is quite skeptical. The other two theories, due to Abbe
Chaume and Georges de Manteyer, make Humbert either a grandson or a
great-grandson of Hugh, Count of Vienne, d. ca. 948 or 966, son of Garnier,
Vicomte of Sens, Count of Troyes, d. 925."

Christopher Cope, in his book, "The Lost Kingdom of Burgundy", writes
under the heading, 'The beginnings of Savoy' : "The House of Savoy
emerged into history with the title of Counts of Maurienne around 1000.
They gained Savoy and other territories during the eleventh century. They
prospered largely because almost alone of the Burgundian nobles Count
Hubert White Hands backed the German conquerers against his own
soverign, Rudolph III; and his son [sic. - even his own genealogical tables
show him as Humbert's grandson] AMADEUS II accompanied the EMPORER
HENRY III into Lombardy and became a good friend of his so
that when they parted HENRY gave him the city of Asti in memory of the
many jars of foaming wine they had emptied together. This happy
episode forged the link between the House of Savoy and Italy which was
broken only thirty-seven years ago [i.e. in 1948]."
