Elfgifu was born about 0997 in Wessex,England. Elfgifu's father was King Aethelred II (the Unready) De Wessex and her mother was Queen Alfgifu Aelflaed De Wessex. Her paternal grandparents were King Edgar I ("the Peaceful") De Wessex and Elfrida De Mercia. She had a brother named "Ironside". She was the younger of the two children. She had nine half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Aethelstan, Ironside, Edred, Ecgbert, Edwy, Edgar, Edric, Edward III, Alfred Aldred, Aelgifu Elgiva, Edith, Wulfhilda, Elgifu, ?, Godgifu Goda De and Godgifu.
