Walter was born in 1130 in Of,Dunmow,Essex,England.1   Walter's father was Robert (Fitzrichard) de Clare and his mother was Maud de Senlis.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Fitzgilbert 1St Earl De lare [Lord De Bienfai and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Simon de St. Liz Earl of Northampton and Matilda (Maud) of Northumbria. He had a sister named Maud. He had two half-brothers named Robert de and Saher IV.  He died at the age of 68 in 1198 in Woodham Walter,Malden,Essex,England.  He was buried in Priory,Dunmow,Essex,England.2

‌Walter and Maud de were married in a religious ceremony about 1154 in Of,,Norfolk,England.  They had three sons and three daughters, named Robert (Fitzwalter), Simon (Fitzwalter), ROBERT 3RD LORD DUNMOW, Matilda (Fitzwalter), Alice maud and MAUD.
