His paternal grandparents were Philip De Braose and Aenor De Totnais; his maternal grandparents were Miles de Pîtres of , Earl of Hereford Gloucester and Sybil de Neufmarche [Countess of Her. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, John de, Giles, Sybil de, Isabel de, Gillian de, Susanna Maud de, Matilda and Bertha De. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
