Mary Alabama was born on February 25th, 1854 in Coffee Co., AL.1 Mary Alabama's father was Gappa Talmadge Yelverton and her mother was Martha Brown Simmons. Her maternal grandparents were William Burrell Simmons and Dority Henderson. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William Gappa, George Goldthwate, Henry Bryant, John Gappa, Frances Virginia, Narcissa Eugena, Martha Blanch, Christiana Eldies and Laura Elenor.
