"IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM THOMAS
On December 8th, 1857 William Houston Thomas was born to William and
Martha Thomas. On November 2nd, 1879 he was married to Mrs. Ella Smith
Jacks. To his union were born 5 girls and four boys.
Surviving are his widow, 7 children, one step-daughter, 31
grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. The children surviving are Mrs. J.
W. Lecroy, the Rev. A. P. Thomas, Mrs. J. Y. High, of Rockford; Mrs.
Scottie Washam, Albertville; W. H. Thomas of Birmingham; J. S. Thomas of
Clanton, and the Rev. A. B. Thomas of Cairo, Ga.
For 60 years, 11 months, and 21 days, he traveled the troublesome
path of life, walking hand in hand with his mate, and when he saw the
crossing was near, he remarked that his love for her was greater than
ever. In 1883, he united with Poplar Springs Baptist Church and
thereafter he manifested his newness of life by his consecrated Christian
conduct. He was a quiet unassuming personage of a retiring disposition, a
lovable companion and devoted father.
The esteemed in which he was held was attested by the beautiful
floral offerings which adorned his casket. He died ripe in years, rich in
faith, honored and loved by all who knew him. Honesty and truth was
written on his heart.
His son and Pastor A. P. Thomas" (1)
