(John Smith married Frances Pody 26 Dec 1842 I/158)
"John Smith was born January 9, 1821 in Tennessee, moved to Coosa County
at a young age. He was married three times, his first marriage was to
Fannie Pody. They had three sons, Dave, William and Henry. His second
marriage was to Nancy Logan, born May 15, 1831 in Coosa County, Alabama.
They had five children: Mary, born 1853; John A., born Feb. 18, 1855;
Ella, born October 15, 1857; Jim M., born September 21, 1860; J. P.
(Pat), born January 18, 1862. All five children were born in Coosa
County. His third marriage was Sisy Boyette. They had one son, Linza. He
was born at Flint Hill and lived in Coosa County all his life.
It will be noted that the first of the Smith families connected with
Flint Hill history is that of John Smith born January 9, 1821, and that
he came to Coosa County at a young age. As one of the early settlers, he
was in a position to pick out a good farm location. It can well be said
that he made an excellent choice in that his farm was made up largely of
rich bottom land, and the farm selected was kept up during his lifetime
and afterwards as one of the best farms in Coosa County.
Comparatively speaking, the Smiths of Flint Hill had a good start -
not only in the quality of the farms but also in the matter of good,
solid citizenship. This holds to this day. Many of today’s Smith families
came originally from Virginia. According to the first United States
Census, the census of 1790, list more than 400 heads of families in
Virginia. No other census of 1790, list more than 400 heads of families
in Virginia. No other family shown in the 1790 Census exceeds in number
the Smith family. This is probably true on any census taken in Coosa
County.
We would like to point out how, through marriage, some of the leading
families are joined. In this case, John A. Smith, II married Eliza
Darden, thus joining or bring together the Smith and Darden families." (1)
