My g-g-g-grandparents were Elijah and Nancy (Cornett) Smith. Elijah's
parents were Patrick and Mary (Lindsey) Smith. Elijah and Nancy were one
of the earliest families to settle in Coosa Co., migrating there from
Jackson Co., AL in 1837. It appears that Elijah was prominent in the
early history of Coosa County. Unfortunately, he died in 1844 at the
young age of 37 years.
Elijah Smith's widow Nancy married Abraham Atchley in 1850. As you
probably know, Mr. Atchley's daughter Malinda (from his first marriage)
was the second wife of H. Alexander Logan. Mr. Logan's first wife was
Martha Ann Smith who was possibly a relative of Elijah Smith. One of
their daughters Nancy Logan married John Alexander Smith, a younger
brother of Elijah Smith.
Elijah Smith's daughter Mary Jane was my g-g-grandmother. She married
James Kil/Kirkpatrick in Coosa Co. in 1849 and their first child Elijah
James was my g-grandfather. James Kil/Kirkpatrick was born in GA in 1823
and he came to Coosa Co. in about 1844. He migrated on to Walker Co., AL
in the mid-to-late 1860's after the WBTS. James served in Co. "G", 2nd
Alabama Cavalry Regiment during the War. I have not been able to
identify James' father as yet, although Hue Kirkpattrick (sic) who was
in Coosa Co. in 1850 is a possibility. I do know that James was not a
member the John D. Kilpatrick Family which was in Coosa Co. during this
time.
I noticed in one of your Genforum postings that George McEwen and Mary
Sears were your g-g-grandparents. According to George E. Brewer's
history book (pg. 37), "At the Turnpike, John Sears and George McEwen had
a good mill from about 1856. There had been a mill at the same site much
earlier, but it was washed away and the site was unused for years."
Elijah Smith built and operated a mill on Hatchet Creek in 1837-1838 and
I believe the Sears-McEwen Mill was built on this old site. The land at
the intersection of Hatchet Creek and present-day Hwy 231 north of
Rockford was owned by Elijah at the time of his death, and his mill in
that area was still in operation when his estate was finalized in 1847.
Can you shed any light on this possibility?
I would very much like to share information with you if you are
interested. I know I can benefit from your bountiful knowledge of the
history of Coosa Co. and, hopefully, some of my information would be of
interest to you.
