His paternal grandparents were Hugh Shaw and Elizabeth Finley; his maternal grandparents were Henry Logan and Martha Ann George. He had four brothers and a sister, named Leonidas, Jefferson Yancy, David Lee, John F. and Catherine E.. He was the second youngest of the six children.
