He served in the Civil War in Company D, 3rd Battalion, Hillard's Legion.
He enlisted at Dublin, Montgomery Co., AL on 9 May 1862 at the age of 28,
married and a resident of Oak Grove. He resigned 11 Feb 1863 at
Knoxville, TN. (From: Historical Records Petersburg, VA) He was a 1st
Lieutenant.
3rd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion
The 3rd Infantry Battalion was organized with six companies at
Montgomery, 25 June 1862. It was consolidated with four companies of the
1st Infantry Battalion and designated the 60th Infantry Regiment at
Charleston, TN, on 25 November 1863.
3rd Battalion field and staff officers: Lt. Col. John William
Augustine Sanford; MajorHatch Cook.
[Its assignments were as for the 1st Battalion except for the period
December
1862-March 1863 when it was assigned to Knoxville and the Dept. of East
Tennessee. Otherwise, assignments and battle participation is the same.]
On his heastone he has Sr., indicating there was a son named after him.
Thomas J. Rushing had a cotton gin and a grain mill. He served in the
Confederate Army. He was a wagoner. He came home periodically to run the
gin and the mill in season. The gin and mill burned in late 1889. Thomas
had health problems and died soon after.
