His paternal grandparents were David Huffman and Martha Sally Rambo; his maternal grandparents were John Jackson and Temperance Ann Henry. He had six brothers and six sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named William Dansler, John David, James A., Thomas Allen, Joseph Elvin, Elbert Ether, Martha Temperance, Mary Ellen, Effie Pearl, Emily Esther, Ines Edith, Henrietta Bernice and Baby.
