Joshua, Jr. was born in 1794 in Amelia County, Virginia.1 Joshua, Jr.'s father was Joshua Bernard Garrett and his mother was Mary Jane Taylor. His paternal grandparents were Stephen Garrett and Magdalene Bernard; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Taylor and Catherine VanDyke. He had two brothers named Loderick and Joseph. He was the oldest of the three children.-
