Prior to the time of Ebles, his father, the Count of Poitiers was the Count of
Angouleme, while the Count of Auvergne was also the Duke of Aquitaine. Ebles
consolidated all these in his own person. When William succeeded his father,
he became the first of the name William to become Count of Poitiers, but, as
two previous Williams (who had both died without progeny) had been Dukes of
Aquitaine, he became William III of Aquitaine.
