General Notes

Robert de Ogle, son and heir, by the abovenamed Anabel (a).  From 1318 onwards he was on service in the Marches, both fighting and organising transport.  In 1324 he was returned as a man-at-arms of Northumberland to attent the Great Council at Westminster, under the writ of 9 May.  The name of his wife is unknown (d), and the date of his death uncertain. (a) Settlements had been made upon him by his father, John, son of Thomas de Oggill, in 1296-97--the shrievality of Sir John de Kirkeby; in 1302, and again in 1304 and 1313.  The first witnesses to that of 1304 were Sir Hugh and Sir Roger Gubiun.

(d) The fact that he held a part, and his descendants the bulk, of the manor of Shilvington has suggested to genealogists that his wife was Margaret, daughter and heir of Sir Hugh Gubiun, sheriff of Northumberland 1292-96, on whom, as younger son, that manor appears to have been settled.  Sir Hugh Gubiun left 6 daughters and coheirs (none named Margaret), of whom the eldest, Alice m. Simon Ward, and the 4th, Agnes m. Robert's younger brother John de Ogle.  The Ogles acquired Shilvington from the coparceners, but not by marriage.  Lord Ogle quartered the arms of Gubiun... The Gubiun arms are not among those shown on the tomb of the 3rd Lord Ogle.

Note: CP states that there is no proof that Robert is the father of Robert de Ogle, b. 1306.
