General Notes

John de Ogle, son of Thomas abovenamed, was a juror in Northumberland in Jan 1267/8.  He was knighted under Henry III.  In 1272 order was made for distraint upon his lands.  He sat, in 1285, as one of the Justices of the Prior of Tynemouth, and was several times elected a juror on quo warranto proceedings at the eyre of Hilary term, 1291/2.  He was Knight of the Shire in the Parliament summoned to York, May 1298.  He m. Anabel (n), who survived him.  He was living 4 May 1315/6 (o), and was dead before 3 July 1323 (p).  [Complete Peerage, X:23]

(o) Oswald Barron tells the Border tale of how John "entertained at Ogle castle Sir David Dunbar, a Scots champion, who was wandering with a provocative fox-tail in his cap, and in and after-dinner arument slew his guest with a pole-axe as he sat at table."

(p) The end of the first term of office as sheriff of John de Fenwick, who witnessed two deeds of John de Ogle's widow, quitclaiming to Robert de Oggel, her son, her rights of dower in Ogle.  John de Ogle had issue younger children John and Isabel.
