His paternal grandparents were Ivar Oplaendinge Jarl of the Uplanders of Norway and Eysteinsdotter Throndheim; his maternal grandparents were Ragnvald Gudrodsson of Agder and Tora Sigurdsdottir. He had five brothers named Robert (Rollo) Duke of, Malahule Haldrick, Turstan, Hrollangr and Rognvald Eysteinsson Earl. He was the youngest of the six children.
