Robert was born about 1116 in Of, Woodham Walter, Essex, England.  Robert's father was Jr Richard Fitz Gilbert De Richard Fitzgilbert Lord Jr/Clare and his mother was Gernon Adeliza Alice De Meschines Gernon. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Gilbert De, Roger De, Richard De, Adeliza De, Rohese De, Adles, Alice De and Rose De.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Roger De and Isabel De.  He died in 1134.  He was buried in Priory, St Neot's, Huntingdonshire, England.
