Maud (Matilda) de was born about 1230 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.  Maud (Matilda) de's father was William III de Ferrers , 5th Earl of Derby and her mother was Sibyl Marshal.  Her paternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley; her maternal grandparents were William Marshal , 3rd Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare , Countess of Pembroke. She had four sisters named Isabel de, Agnes de, Eleanor de and Joan de.  She was the third oldest of the five children. She had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Robert de, William IV, Elizabeth de, Joan de, Agnes de and Berta de.
