Berta de was born about 1254 in Derby, Derbyshire, England. Berta de's father was William III de Ferrers , 5th Earl of Derby and her mother was Margaret de Quincy. Her paternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley; her maternal grandfather was Roger de Quincy , 2nd Earl of Winchester. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert de, William IV, Elizabeth de, Joan de and Agnes de. She was the youngest of the six children. She had five half-sisters named Isabel de, Agnes de, Maud (Matilda) de, Eleanor de and Joan de.-
