Barbara was born about 1280 in Douglas Castle, Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Barbara's father was William "Le Hardi" 5th Laird of Douglas , Sir and her mother was Elizabeth Stewart. Her paternal grandparents were William "Longlegs" 3rd Laird de Douglas , Sir and Martha of Carrick; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Stewart , 4th High Steward of Scotland and Jean Heiress of Arran & Bute. She had a brother and a sister, named James "The Black" 6th Laird and Muriel. She was the second oldest of the three children. She had a half-brother named Archibald.-
