His paternal grandparents were Duke/Count/ Henry OF BRABANT Henrik II and Adelaide OF THE BETUWE; his maternal grandparents were Count Otto II OF CHINY AND NAMUR and Alice Adelaide OF NAMUR. He had a brother and a sister, named Godfrey II and Adeliza Of Brabant. He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Bertrum and Ida. About 1020 Richard II, Duke of Normandy, places Ralph and hisson Roger, along with others, in charge of the castle ofTillieres to hold it against Odo of Chartres, the Duke'sbrother-in-law, who had revolted. Odo attacked the castle butwas routed and barely escaped with his life.
