He had a sister named Cicely. He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Richard Of Hereford, Mabel, Elana and Aveline. About 1020 Richard II, Duke of Normandy, places Ralph and hisson Roger, along with others, in charge of the castle ofTillieres to hold it against Odo of Chartres, the Duke'sbrother-in-law, who had revolted. Odo attacked the castle butwas routed and barely escaped with his life.
