Matthias Button was baptized 11 October 1607 at Harrold, Bedfordshire, England. He came to America on the ship "Abigail," with Gov. John Endicott's party, landing at Salem, MA 6 Sept 1628. There is a possibility that he actually came from Holland to America, a son of one of the Pilgrims who immigrated from England to Amsterdam in the winter of 1608-09 and to Leyden in the spring on 1609 where they resided for 12 years. According to "Button Families in America," his supposed father was buried at Harrold, Bedforshire 26 June 1617, but the record says nothing about his death, perhaps inferring that his body was brought there to be buried beside a wife or child. Further, among the effects of Matthias's son Daniel found at his death was a "Holland shirt," perhaps indicating that his family had brought it with him from Holland or, alternatively indicating a Dutch ancestry of Daniel's mother, Ann Teagle or of Matthias's first wife, Lettice/Lettyce.
Matthias removed to Boston in 1633 where he among the earliest settlers He was admitted to the First Church there with his wife 26 Jan. 1633. He removed to Ipswich prior to 1639 as, in that year, he sold a one half acre houselot in Ipswich to William Symmons of Ipswich, lot granted (originally?) to Wm. Goodhue the elder, John Johnson, Nathaniel Bishop and Edw. Beacham, "having been granted to John Thornton, deceased, and falling into the hands of the grantor by marriage with Joane, widow of said Thornton, who is living." Entered at the Ipswich court 16 Nov. 1639. He also sold land at Ipswich 14 June 1644 to Thomas Wells. It was probably after this, in about 1646, that he removed to Haverhill where he lived until his death.
In 1650 his estate at Haverhill was valued at 60 pounds; he had a house granted to him and received 6 acres of plow land laid out 2 June 1652. His name also appears on a list of 20 who built houses on the common of Haverhill. He lived first in the village itself, then in the western part of the town, then in the eastern part and later in thatched house which burned in 1671, located about 1 mile northeast of the village.
In "Old Norfolk County(MA) Records," in the "Essex Antiquarian." Vol 5, 1901, p. 179, Matthias Button of Haverhill with his wife Elizabeth mortgaged to Mr. John Ward of Haverhill "my mansion or dwelling house and land on the west side of Merrie's creek in Haverhill" for 21 pounds, 3 shillings, 10d. Acknowledged in court at Ipswich 28 March 1665; one of the winesses was Nathaniel Saltonstall (see above). Matthias signed with his mark, an upside-down U; Elizabeth's mark was "Cmy."
On 11 April 1665, Matthias "Butten" of Haverhill conveyed to brother-in-law George Wheeler, "for the use of my wife Elizabeth," 80 acres of land in Haverhill; acknowledged in court 11 May 1665. This time his mark was a U on its side, open end to the left.
Matthias died intestate. The inventory of his estate was filed at Salisbury, MA court 14 April 1674 by Capt. Nath. Saltonstall, administrator. According to Savage, he was of "great age" when he died.
