General Notes

SIR GILBERT ATON of West Ayton, &c., co. York, son and heir of William Aton of the same, by Isabel (d), daughter of Sir Simon DE VEER, Of Goxhill, co. Lincoln, and Sproatley in Holderness. He was knighted, with the Prince of Wales, 22 May 1306, and had a grant of free warren in his demesne lands in Barlby, the Holmes, Welham, and Knapton, 7 August 1308. He established his claim to the lands of William de Vescy of Kildare [Lord de Vescy] in 1316 and 1317, did homage 7 November 1317, and had livery of Langton and Wintringham, co. York, 22 January 1317/8, and of Malton, 26 November 1318. In 1323-24, he confirmed, for 700 marks, to Henry de Percy, the grant which Anthony, Bishop of Durham, had made him of the castle of Alnwick, He was summoned to three Councils, 30 December 1324 and 20 February 1324/5, and 25 February 1341/2, by writs directed Gilberto de Aton'. (d) She (Isabel) was heir of her mother Ada, 4th sister and in her issue coheir of Roger Bertram of Mitford; but not of her father, Simon, who by his 1st marrage, had Sir Simon de Veer, his son and heir.  The younger Simon gave the manor of Bottesford, co. Lincoln, to his uncle, Roger de Veer, prior of the knights Hospitallers, 3 Sep 1270.

Gilbert de Aton inherited, in the 9th of Edward II, the estates of the Barons de Vesci. This Gilbert had command the year before to fit himself with horse and arms and to be at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the feast day of the Blessed Virgin to restrain the hostilities of the Scots. In the 13th of Edward II, he was in the expedition into Scotland; and in the 17th of the same monarch he confirmed (in consideration of receiving 700 marks sterling) to Henry Lord Percie, as heir of William de Vesci, the castle and lands of Alnwick which Anthony Beke, bishop of Durham and patriarch of Jerusalem, had sold to the said Henry, although but confided to the bishop by William Lord de Vesci in trust for his bastard son, the last William de Vesci. In the following year (30 December, 1324) Gilbert de Aton was summoned to parliament as a baron of the realm, and he was so summoned during the remainder of his life. His lordship d. in 1342, and was s. by his son, William de Aton, 2nd Baron Aton.
