John was born on July 26th, 1754 in London Grove, Chester Co, PA. John's father was William Willis and his mother was Betty Harlan. His paternal grandparents were Edward Willis and Katharine Maris; his maternal grandparents were James Harlan and Susannah Osborn. He had a brother and three sisters, named Joel, Susanna, Hannah and Lydia. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Samuel, Joseph, Mary and Elizabeth.-
