Joseph was born on September 19th, 1788 in , Woodford Co., Ky. Joseph's father was John (Peg Leg) WHITAKER and his mother was Martha Wilcoxson (Widow) WILSON. His paternal grandparents were Mark Or Marcus WHITAKER and Tabitha; his maternal grandparents were Isaac WILCOXSON (WILLCOCKSON) and Martha BANE. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William W., John Jerigan, Benjamin, Daniel (Twin), Thomas (Twin), Martha "Patsy" and Nancy. He died at the age of 86 on September 20th, 1874 in , Lincoln Co., Tn. He was buried in Mulberry Cem., Lincoln Co., Tn.-
