Isabella was born in 1283 in Okehampton, Devonshire, England. Isabella's father was Hugh Courtenay and her mother was Eleanor Despencer. Her paternal grandparents were John Courtenay and Isabel De Vere; her maternal grandparents were Hugh Le Despencer and Aliva Basset. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Hugh, Philip, Thomas, John, Robert, Eleanor, Margaret, Avelina, Egeline and Alice. She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.-
