Hugh was born about 1339 in Kilbirnie Castle,Ayrshire,Scotland. Hugh's father was Lord David Barclay Of Brechin and his mother was Margaret De Brechin. His paternal grandfather was Sir David De Berkeley; his maternal grandparents were Lord David De Brechin and Margaret De Bonkyl. He had a brother and two sisters, named David, Jean and Christian. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died in 1430.
