His paternal grandparents were Cadell Mawr Ap Rhodri and Rheingar; his maternal grandparents were Llywarch Ap Hyfaidd Of Deheubarth and Unknown. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Owain, Maredydd, Rhodri, Rhain, Dyfnwal, Edwin, Einion, Gwenllian and Angharad. He was the second youngest of the ten children.-
