Samuel was born in 1801 in Virginia.1 Samuel's father was John Russell and his mother was Hannah "Patience" Rankin. His paternal grandparents were Jeffrey Russell and Elizabeth Wood. He had nine brothers and eight sisters, named James Samuel, Sanders, Thomas Jefferson, Francis(Frank), William, Jeremiah, John, Lawrence, Manoah B., Ginsey Jane, Armilda, Anna, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Jemima, Esther, Jemima Elizabeth and Rachel.-
