John was born on January 2nd, 1769 in Union District, South Carolina.1   John's father was Robert Lusk and his mother was Mary Vance.  His paternal grandparents were James Lusk and Jennett; his maternal grandfather was James Vance. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James Vance, Robert, Andrew, Thomas, George Vance, Nancy Agnes, Mary, Jennett and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
