James was born in 1730 in ,Hanover,.1 James' father was Charles Clay and his mother was Sarah 2. His paternal grandparents were Charles Clay and Hannah Wilson. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Charles, Henry and Judith. He died at the age of 60 in 1790 in Halifax County, VA.1 General Notes
