Mahala was born in 1838 in Ohio. Mahala's father was Daniel Boster and her mother was Mary Lake. Her paternal grandparents were Phillip Boster and Elizabeth Barbara Hinterliter; her maternal grandfather was Daniel Lake. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas Levi, Jacob, Daniel J., Sally, Mary Elizabeth "Polly", Alameda, Melinda, Catherine and Harriet. She was the youngest of the ten children.-
